We Are Family

7/14/2010 - Families everywhere are unique. No matter what your family looks like, you've got your own individual story to share. Those stories are the inspiration for the "Celebrating Our Families" blog, a new project of Equality NC aimed at bringing together stories from LGBT and allied North Carolinians. We're excited about this opportunity to hear your stories, and encourage you to contribute them.

You can view the blog here.

We're seeking all types of stories, from all types of families, be those families LGBT couples, couples raising kids, straight allies, single parents, etc. You get the picture. And speaking of pictures, we'd like those too! Nothing gussies up a story like a nice family photo.

Your family story can focus on anything — everyday triumphs and struggles, love at first sight, coming out to your family, a family trip, or how your family has dealt with discrimination and hardship. True stories like these give a face to the diversity of our movement, and show why the struggle for equal rights is so important to our families.

By sharing these stories, we recognize that families are the most important dimension behind public policies. Our families are all different, but our shared experiences bring us closer together.

If you have a story about your family or relationship that you would like included in the blog, we very much encourage you to share it with us — and the rest of the world. There are two ways you can do this:

1. You can write your story, and send it with a photo to matthew@equalitync.org.

2. You can record a video (with a webcam or camera) and upload it to YouTube, then e-mail us the link (or e-mail it to Matthew directly — you can also contact him with any questions).

We look forward to hearing your stories! They are an essential part in showing the reality of how policies impact everyday families in North Carolina.

(Here's a shorter explanation of the family story project, if you'd like to help us collect more stories by posting it on your website or Facebook page:

Equality NC Seeks Your Family Stories!

Equality NC, a statewide group dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, has started a new blog to collect family stories and photos, and wants YOU to be a part of it! This is a great way to give voice to LGBT and allied people from across North Carolina and show the diversity of our movement.

Email your story and family photo, or video link, to matthew@equalitync.org. You can view the blog at www.encfamilies.blogspot.com.)
